Mrs. Cooper's students were jolly, happy souls this week as our mystery reader came to grace us with her presence (and presents). Mrs. Van Amburgh came and shared The Baker's Dozen (A Colonial American Tale), Retold by Heather Forest, with us. The book takes us many miles away to a bakery owned by Van Amsterdam. He has wonderful red-and-white iced St. Nicholas cookies with raisin eyes and a walnut mouth that the people of his town want the most. Soon Van Amsterdam and his tasty cookies become famous. But fame makes the baker greedy--and suddenly his breads fall flat, his muffins harden, and his pies taste sour. Then, right around Christmas, an old woman helps Van Amsterdam to remember the joy of giving. A big thanks also goes out to Mrs. Van Amburghs little elf, Mrs. Worley. Mrs. Cooper's students got their very own St. Nicholas cookie to finish decorating (as Mrs. Van Amburgh surely put her beloved elf to work and she had to stop baking). Mrs. Cooper's students loved the book, their mystery reader, the lovely elf helper who got a break from her workshop, and a tasty treat! Thank you Mrs. Van Amburgh! |
