Miller Feast

LaRue Miller's first graders enjoyed their 1st Annual Thanksgiving Feast on November 19, 2008. We set the table with our "paper table cloth" and we gathered for lunch Pilgrim and Indian style. We wore Indian headbands and vests. Getting to spend time with our friends was such a treat!

 
 
BarteringLaRue Miller's 1st graders learned about bartering for Thanksgiving. We met in the hall and exchanged our gifts with each other.
 
Fundraiser WinnerCongratulations to Jackson C. in Mrs. Nanney's Kindergarten class. He won the grand prize for the fundraiser by selling over 100 items and reaching over $1,000.00.
 

Grant WinnerCongratulations to i-Pod (Applaud) You! writers: Amy Clark, Val Milson, Krista Bruton, Melissa Bolgiano, Tammie Thompson, and Karyn Story for their innovative use of technology to enhance engagement and reading achievement of learners! Parents will be able to hear and view reading achievements and progress of their child's oral reading while working on fluency.

 

Grant WinnersCongratulations to the Tricycle Town Team of Karla Ostroski, Karen Poland, Adrienne Mitchell, Jurae Greiten, Christy McAfee, and Teri Panza for their innovative outdoor dramatic play area consisting of a tricycle path and buildings for our youngest Miller learners to enjoy! Construction will begin shortly and all PK, KG, 1st graders, and special programs will have multiple language and physical opportunities to interact, play, and learn in this creative education setting.

 
Author VisitStoryteller, Shelly Tucker, recently visited LaRue Miller Elementary Library Media Center, and performed various folk tales and other stories for the students.
 

Veteran's Day ProgramVet Day pic 2Veteran's Day was celebrated at LaRue Miller Elementary on Tuesday, Nov. 11. With true American pride, fifth grade students presented a program of narration, song, poetry, and patriotic images from the singing of our national anthem to bugle calls, to Mrs. Miller sharing her family story about Dorie Miller, and the final sounding of "Taps." Students paid tribute to the "Wall of Honor" currently displayed in the hallway with pictures and stories of service men and women connected to our families on campus. Special thanks to the veterans and distinguished guests who attended the ceremony.

 
Thinking Map 2Thinking MapMiss Howard's 1st graders at LaRue Miller are learning to use Thinking Maps. They started with the bubble map, moved to the tree map, and then their final product.
 
RRW GroupRed Ribbon Week was a huge success. Students and staff dressed as construction workers, wore camouflage, dressed all in black, dressed all in red, and signed our "drug free contract" one brick at a time. All of these activities were a reminder for all of us to live our life without drugs. We also helped other children by collecting 418 books for a local children's home. Together we can build a future without drugs.
 
Build a trainMrs. Poland, PK teacher, Xander, Jacob, and Bryan decided they wanted to build a train. They put on their safety goggles and hard hat and headed to the construction center. The boys problem solved throughout the whole process and were able to give each other ideas to construct the train. Mrs. Poland guided them by asking them questions. After almost an hour with the train falling apart over and over, they accomplished their task by reworking the parts. "All Aboard at LaRue Miller!"
 
City Hall visitSecond graders at LaRue Miller visited City Hall with Mrs. Brown.
 

LaRue Miller students in Mrs. Crisp’s class enjoyed decorating pumpkins to include in their Pumpkin Patch. Pumpkins were designed and created to look like characters from novels, children’s books, and familiar movie stars.

Student Council at workMrs. Wilson, LaRue Miller Elementary counselor, recently met with the new Student Council to discuss plans and jobs for the upcoming Red Ribbon Week festivities. Red Ribbon Week will be the week of October 27-31 and each day is celebrated with a special theme. Congratulations to Colton, Thomas, Hunter, Dalton, Morgan, Jordan, Gage, Grant, Ellen, Raby, Madison, and Morgan for serving on the new council and planning a wonderful week of events for everyone!
 
Captain CongratulatesCaptain congratulates Shelby H. for being LaRue Miller's top fundraiser for the Walk for Diabetes. LaRue Miller raised over $1,100.00.
 
PiratesMrs. Beckwith's second graders at LaRue Miller dressed up as pirates for a scavenger hunt. They reviewed their map skills by hunting for clues throughout the school to find the treasure chest of jewels!
 
Continent ChantThe second graders at LaRue Miller had fun learning about the continents. The students enjoyed singing and moving as they learned "Continent Chant" led by Ms. Stanley.
 
Miller Reading TimeMrs. Miller visited our first graders at LaRue Miller Elementary and treated them to a story about sharing and other character traits.
 
100 CountersCongratulations to Gavin, Reigni, Camden, Max, Madison, Rylee & Wes. These LaRue Miller students in Ms. Story's class can count from 0-100!
 
Paleontologist 1Paleontologist 2LaRue Miller third grade students in Ms. Bly's class made fossils. Did you know a scientist who studies fossils is a paleontologist?
 
HelicoptersMrs. Garippa’s 5th grade science students are investigating variables with the helicopters they made in class. They found there are many factors or conditions that can affect the action of the helicopter.
 
Firefighters visitFourth grade students at LaRue Miller Elementary enjoyed a visit from their local firemen. They learned about the procedures, equipment and daily routine of the fire station. Students read a story about fire fighters and studied fire fighting from long ago.
 

Mrs. LaRue Kilgore Miller officially cut the ribbon to open the beautiful learning facility bearing her name on Sunday, September 21. Dignataries, family, friends, students, and staff were on hand to assist her, share stories and inspirational moments from her teaching career, tour the campus, and enjoy a lavish reception. Mrs. Miller herself is noted for saying, "A challenging start turns into a great ending." She is a testimony to strong character and continues to inspire learners and leaders of the MISD community with her extraordinary educational legacy.

Working with PatternsMrs. King's first grade class created patterns using Kidspiration in the computer lab.
 
Bell HangersLaRue Miller principal, Beth Van Amburgh, was given a special lift by MISD Director of Construction, David Boswell and Darrell Carder when the new Miller Elementary bell was officially hung in the bell tower. The new school's bell is equipped with a beautiful carillon system playing weekdays on the hour during school hours.
