Penny Boats

J. R. Irvin Kindergarten had "Transportation Creation" to culminate their transportation unit. The students choose to make a boat or an airplane. The winners of the airplanes that flew the farthest are (L to R): Aryn W (2nd Place), Osvaldo M (1st Place), Amanda A (3rd Place).

The winners of the boats that held the most pennies before sinking are (L to R): Alexia C 804 pennies (2nd Place), Blakely F 1056 pennies (1st Place), Aaron H 328 pennies (3rd Place)
A fun time was had by all the students flying their airplanes and sinking their boats!

Field of Readers from IrvinIrvin students join Principal Jean Embry and librarian Mrs. Giacomozzi on the field of the MISD Multi Purpose Stadium for the 3rd annual Field of Readers. Over 1,600 students and parents enjoyed the reading activities, games, storyteller, and  price book fair at this fun-filled community reading event. Toothfairy VisitSparkle the Toothfairy made a special visit to Kindergarten thru 2nd grade students at J.R Irvin. With the assistance of two of our teachers, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Rogers, Sparkle taught the students the importance of brushing teeth, flossing, visiting the dentist,and foods that are good for our teeth. Each student was dusted with fairy dust on their way out.
 
Alvarado VisitSgt. Daniel Alvarado visited with J.R. Irvin's fifth grade students on November 11, Veteran's Day. Sgt. Alvarado served in the army and completed two tours of duty in Iraq. He shared pictures and stories and answered questions from students. Sgt. Alvarado's visit was a very special way to celebrate Veteran's Day at Irvin Elementary.
 
Mock ElectionStudents at J.R. Irvin participated in a school-wide mock election. Pictured is Student Council member Ellie S., signing in 2nd grader Dakota A. Also pictured is Morgan M. The students had a great time, and ended up electing John McCain as the next president.
 
50s Dress up50s Staff Dress up3rd gradestudents, Rachel M, Katy P, Seth F, Kathryn A, Brittany A, Aubry W, Brayden N, and Reagan J celebrate the 50th day of school by dressing from the 50's era. Activities that day included 50's word problems, and creating a double bubble map comparing "Leave it to Beaver" to a modern day sitcom.
 
Nelson charactersIrvin Elementary's 4th Grade teachers, Mrs. Golden, Ms. Tidwell, and Mrs. Hoover, surprised their students with their character costumes. They dressed as Coach Swamp, Miss Viola Swamp, and Miss Nelson from the book series by James Marshall. The books the fourth grade classrooms have been reading are Miss Nelson has a Field Day, Miss Nelson is Back, and Miss Nelson is Missing.
 
Firefighter visitThe fourth grade students at J.R. Irvin Elementary enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Golden's husband, a Duncanville Firefighter. The fourth graders extended fire safety week with the story, Fire! Students were able to relate the first-hand information to their fourth grade literature.
 
Pep RallyJ R Irvin students with the help of FSMS band and cheerleaders enjoyed a Red Ribbon Pep Rally at Irvin's old gym. To help kick off the week of saying no to drugs we had a special performance from the Supremettes singing their smash single "Stop, In the Name of Drugs!" Featuring from left to right, Debra Applegate, Jean Embry, Karena Blackwell, and Angela Green. Here is a sample of their song, "Stop! cause I'm warning you, Before you smoke that joint, Stop! Cause I'm warning you, Before you take that drink, Think it over, Don't do drugs, We care for you, To make the right choices".
 
Student Council candidatesStudent Council speeches and elections were held at J R Irvin for the 2008-2009 school year. Pictured from left to right are: Brynne T, Rachel F, Caleb W, Jordan P, Sarah S, Ms. Tidwell, Marshall H, Ellie S, Luke V, Kayla J, Jacob B and Hudson P. They all did an AWESOME job in giving their speeches!!!! After the speeches 2nd thru 5th grade students voted for the new student council board members. Congratulations to the following students: Hudson P is President, Ellie S is Vice President, Jordan P is Secretary, Sarah S is Treasurer and Rachel F is our Historian.

States of matterFourth-grade students at J.R. Irvin learned about the different phases of matter. Pictured is Skylar C observing the properties of a colloid, matter that has properties of both a liquid and a solid.
 
PatternsFirst graders in Mrs. Rogers class at J R Irvin are studying patterns. Students are using different shapes and colors of blocks to practice making patterns with. Pictured is Evan D modeling his pattern.
 
9/11 TributeThird graders at J.R. Irvin paid tribute to the heroes of 9-11 in a touching performance.
