Pitts and School Board Recognize Students

Texas Representative Jim Pitts gave congratulatory remarks to students during the School Board special recognition that was held January 24. 

MISD had three National Merit Commended Scholars last year including Andrew Hernandez, Rachel Hurst and Noah Rodgers. Hernandez was also recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar for 2011.

Thirty-three students were recognized as Advance Placement Scholars this year, with 23 of those scholars graduating in 2011. The AP scholars include McKenna Maxwell, Morgan Motley, Robert Parish, Grayson Ridge Sydney Smith, John Toon, Akshar Ved and Rebecca Walker. The two AP Scholars with Honors were Jagger McCord and Noah Rodgers.

FFA groupThe school board also recognized the five Future Farmers of America competition teams that reached state and finished in the top 20 of state last year. The Radio Broadcasting team finished fifth in state and included Sinclaire Dobelbower, Conner Buttgen and Sarah Smith. The Senior Farm Skills team finished fourth in state and included Myron Hanson, J.D. Pruitt and Erin Mitchell. The Junior Farm Skills team finished eighth in state and included Hayden Otterman, Collin Starks and Jacob Walls. The Senior Parliamentary Procedure team included Candace Woolverton, Kevin Chappell, Alicia Alhman, Clara Sterile, Ashley Hairston, Kyle Caldwell and Kati Wickliffe. The Junior Parliamentary Procedure team included McKinsi Moore, Christen Harris, Ashley Johnson, Mallory Drake, Khloe Fegan, Dustin Hlvinka and Hailey Drerup.

MHS XC teamThe boys and girls cross country teams were both regional qualifiers and placed as District Runner Up and Third Place District, respectively. The girls’ team included Angelica Diaz, Micah Masters, Jasmine Pitts, Sydney Rangel, Kelli Ricks, Haley Ricks, Brooke Scourfield, Karrington Slaydon and Riann Winget. The boys’ team included Zach Baker, John Bates, Hunter Boteier, Kamren Hook, Matt McCook, Josh Tobolka and Jacob Wilson.

Volleyball teamThe volleyball team tied for third in district last year and was a bi-district qualifier. Paige Winingham was named Defensive Player District 11-5A. Lexa Corbin and Tadam Mergener were named First Team All-District. Jaci Browning, Morgan Mobley and Caitlin Paschall were named Second Team All-District. Honorable Mentions went to Faith Hardin and Morgan McBride. Many of the volleyball players were recognized as Academic All-District including Browning, Corbin, Lili Escamilla, Hardin, Mobley, Paschall, Kelli Markwardt, Mergener, Courtney Tobolka, Sarah Waddill, Lauren Wilkerson and Morgan Winter.

football teamThe MHS Football team also had many players recognized for their athletic performance and academic integrity. Collin Hotstad was named Honorable Mention Academic All-State. Tony Kirk and Jacob Windsor were named Second Team Academic All-State. All-District players included First Team Outside Receiver Brendan Cornell, Second Team Running Back Justin Seeton, Second Team Guard Myron Hanson, Second Team Inside Receiver Lucas Anderson, Second Team Free Safety Bryce Fausett, Second Team Strong Safety Dustin Seeton, Second Team Outside Linebacker Mason Quinn and Second Team Inside Linebacker Dustin Martin.

Academic All-District included Fauset, Dustin Seeton, Windsor, Martin, Daniel Rushing, Justin Seeton, Austin Adams, Cody Samek, Slater Gravens, Will Marks, Hanson, Austin Walker, Ryan Waggoner, Jordan Dismang, Jeff Reynolds, Kirk, Anderson and Collin Garcia.

The winner of the Winter Artwork Contest held at Frank Seale and Walnut Grove Middle Schools was Nathan Phillips, a seventh-grader at Frank Seale. Honorable mentions included Frank Seale eighth-grader Britni Firkins, Walnut Grove sixth-grader Lauren Bannister, Frank Seale sixth-grader Jenna Parker and Walnut Grove seventh-grader Taylor Hunt.
